Beautiful Adventures

Adventures

Life is beautiful and even more so when you have amazing people to spend it with.  This past week we’ve had the pleasure of hosting Kari and sharing our little pieces of heaven with her.  Adventure is out there and from Volcano Boarding on Cerro Negro and exploring Somoto Canyon to lots of parades and food for Independence Day celebrations, we did our best to find it!

Year One: By the Numbers

“Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes
Five hundred twenty-five thousand moments, so dear
Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes
How do you measure, measure a year?

In daylights, in sunsets
In midnights, in cups of coffee
In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife
In five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes
How do you measure, a year in the life?

How about love?
How about love?
How about love?
Measure in love.”

– Seasons of Love, RENT

Measure in love.  A lot can happen in a year. We definitely tried to set our intentions and live into all of those little moments, but it’s still crazy to think that an entire year has past since we arrived in Nicaragua on August 13, 2014.  We’ve had countless of cups of coffee, enjoyed sunsets and sunrises, and definitely shared in laughter and strife.  Most importantly and incredibly, we’ve experienced the love of our new friends and family, Peace Corps and Nicaraguan alike.

It’s impossible to sum up everything we’ve been doing, experiencing, and learning, but in efforts to quantify our year for you all, we pulled out the calculator and tried literally counting our blessings.

Here’s Andrew and Emily’s first year in Nicaragua, by the numbers: Continue reading Year One: By the Numbers

Best Surprise of My Life

image (1)

What’s better than your mom and pops coming to visit during your Peace Corps service?  Surprising you at the airport with all of your siblings who you thought couldn’t come!  I might have fallen down to the floor in excitement, then got back up to jump up and down. My eyes might have been leaking, too.

Home is where your family is.

Pass the Peace

He was in my space. We all have the personal bubble. I even teach kids about it in schools. Different people have varying levels of tolerance and my bubble tends to be pretty small in comparison to a lot of people from the US – I like to be close to people. But this guy was definitely in my space in the not good way. Continue reading Pass the Peace

Of Anniversaries and Prunes

Most dream of that
heart-stopping love.
Of that
can’t think,
can’t breath,
can’t exist without you love.
Of roses and chocolates,
of passion,
of a consuming inferno
that can only be
tempered by the
presence
of the one.

My love once brought me prunes
for our 5-year anniversary.

I wouldn’t have wanted anything else.

When you’re sick or sad,
a love who takes care of you
is better
than
dreams.

…..
P.S. – I’m not sick anymore so friends and family, don’t worry.
P.S.S. – And it might have been raisins, as Andrew mentioned in his last post…but hey…I get a little poetic license, right?
